Occult Rock is a type of music first made known in the late 60’s, by Jinx Dawson in Coven. Coven released their first album Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls in 1969 which was taken off the market shortly after it’s release due to an overwhelmingly negative controversial reaction. Dawson and band members both sung about and were open about being queer, their free love beliefs and the spiritual importance of pleasure. Coven was one of the front running bands and main influences that made Occult Rock known. The band as well as Timothy Leary attended the Black Arts Festival in 1968, Coven hoping to meet Anton Levay who did not show.
