The Rainbow Family first gathered as a relatively small group at the Los Angeles Drum Circle in the summer of ’72. Bonds were made over this beautiful night, a family was formed and they decided they wanted to continue experiencing life together. From this drum circle, the initial family members took up the road and began living and thriving together wherever they could, extending their family wherever they went and enjoying the nomadic life. The Rainbow Family is a group of people who have no representation, leader(s) or home base. The family consists of anyone who wants to consider themselves to be a part of the family. Their traditions are heavily based and centered around Native American Traditions. While striving to take care of the earth and live in line with nature always, the Family meets annually at different national forests across the nation (and other nations) to pray for peace on our planet. This gives the whole family a chance to pay great tribute together to our mother nature by showing and sending our love to her and being at one with her. The Gatherings have provided a very spiritual experience for people of all walks of life and ages since the 70’s, though has recently lost some of the spiritual importance that was present due to a large influx of people coming only to party. The Rainbow Family is also listed as the fourth most threatening terrorist group to the US because of their unpredictability and lifestyle. They are not a body of people depending on capitalism to sustain themselves and this is very threatening to our establishment here in the US. People who chose not to live on the grid are often seen with heavy consequences such as the Rainbow Family’s national terrorist status. The Rainbow Family means many different things to different people, and no matter ones reason for gathering, the Rainbow Family depicts the human race to be one family. The Annual gatherings provide a place for people who want to actualize that family and make it a pleasant reality rather than letting it remain an ideal that we may think about at times but do not make strides to live by.
“When the earth is ravaged and the animals are dying, a new tribe of people shall come unto the earth from many colors, classes, creeds, and who by their actions and deeds shall make the earth green again. They will be known as the warriors of the Rainbow” — Old Native American Prophecy
