smoking bannedThe discipline of female bodies has taken many forms throughout history. This is an interesting artifact, because tobacco smoking, along with the use of other plant substances, in America shares a lot of visible history with counterculture. In 1922, Police forces in Greenwich Village, NYC began to attempt enforcing an initiative to ban women from smoking cigarettes in public. Greenwich Village was emerging as a cultural Mecca, and the ordinance was arguably more directed at dissolving the atmosphere, which was home to many forward thinking women and feminists. smokingsmokebanned2
